Favorite Summer Family Field Trips

A lot of childhood memories are made in summer. Perhaps it’s because we all tend to go outside and, you know, do stuff. Even better, summers are filled with casual, frequent family activities. Here are a few faves that are inexpensive, laid back, and fun, fun, fun!

An afternoon at the beach or local lake is bliss for kids! And if you can make the trip as easy-breezy and fun-focused as possible (don’t plan for days and drag half the house across the hot sand), then it will be for you, too. Just enjoy the sun, the water, the kids, being together, and don’t forget your sun screen!

You can’t go wrong at the zoo or aquarium! How curious are kids about monkeys and sharks and penguins? Extremely curious! And the more you encourage their inquisitive nature, the better. If you live close enough, a season pass maybe the better bet because it’s likely they’ll want to go again and again.

Get your family skate on! I promise you, you will laugh till you cry. And/or go bike riding together. It’s especially nice if you find new trails each time. It’s great to get that exercise while having fun with the fam.

Museums are cool, yes they are! This is a photo of my daughter admiring a work of art by Matisse when she was four. We usually go to kids’ museums, but I still like to go to art and history ones, and they often have a children’s department. Search your area for the museums that may appeal to you and/or your kids and go! Even if for a short visit. Then have lunch outside on the beautiful grounds. There’s nothing wrong with a little exposure to culture.

Don’t miss the fair! They’re magic to the little ones, just instant happy memories. And it’s so nice to see them all glazed over with excitement and watch them fail at containing their enthusiasm. Good times, fun photos. Don’t miss out.

The local botanical garden can be your oasis! If you crave nature and beauty and quiet spaces, this is the place to trick your family into visiting. If you have stroller-aged kids or younger, it shouldn’t be a problem. If they’re a bit older, you might have your work cut out for you.

Kite flying is still a thing. And it’s awesome! It is physically impossible to fly kites with your kids on a breezy day and not feel tangible happiness. The kids are smiling, the kite is soaring, everybody’s bonding, it only cost you a couple bucks . . . it’s a beautiful thing. When was the last time you flew a kite, anyway?

And when the weather isn’t cooperating, or you feel like taking the family out in the evening, splurge and go to the MOVIES! This one isn’t cheap, but going the the movies is so much fun for the kids. Really, it’s a big deal. The lights, the popcorn, the crowd, the seats that eat them up, and now 3D! And when you go as a family, it’s just cool . . . for now. Appreciate these moments while they still want to be seen with you in public.

imageAnd, of course, be ready to pull over at any given park for the random urge to do cartwheels (demonstrated by my daughter in the photo). There’s so much more to do this summer, and it feels like it’s flying by. What are your favorite family outings and field trips?

Thank you for being tuned in parents. I welcome your comments, suggestions, and tips! There’s more for you, too, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and now we’re on Pinterest!
