Family Word Snacks: Fernweh & Voyage

“As vocabulary is reduced, so are the number of feelings you can express, the number of events you can describe, the number of the things you can identify!” -Sheri S. Tepper, A Plague of Angels

Fernweh [FEIRN-veyh]: (n) (adopted from German) literally “farsickness”; wanderlust, a desire to travel, a longing for far-off places

in a sentence: One has to experience Fernweh and yearn in earnest to trade home for a foreign time zone to truly appreciate this word.

voyage: (n) a long journey involving travel by sea or in space; (v) to go on a long journey, typically by sea or in space

in a sentence: Max’s voyage across the sea to where the wild things are made him realize he likes it better where his mom is.

Use those words, particularly around the kids, even the big ones. Never underestimate them or the power of words!
